Reading Guide: Which book to choose for a 5-year-old starting first grade?

Guide de lecture (1)

Starting first grade is a moment of great pride, but also of apprehension. At 5 or 6 years old, the child's status changes: they no longer just want to be told stories, they want to master words

To support this transition on TakelakaRoa.mg, we have identified specific criteria to help you choose the ideal reading companion.

1. Prioritize "Mirror" Text (Bilingual)

In first grade, children begin decoding sounds. Having a bilingual text is a tremendous advantage:

  • The balance: The book should not be too text-heavy (no more than 3 to 5 lines per page).

  • The visual cue : The illustration should "tell" the same thing as the text to help the child make connections (e.g., if the word "mamba" is written, the crocodile should be visible in the illustration).

3. Themes That Resonate With Their New Life

First grade is about independence, friendship, and sometimes small fears. Choose books that deal with:

  • School and friends: To make everyday life feel less daunting.
  • Self-confidence: Stories where the hero accomplishes something difficult.
  • Tales and legends: At this age, children love structured stories with a clear moral.

4. Typography: Make It Easy for Them!

Make sure the font is:

  • Large and well-spaced: Pour que l’enfant puisse suivre avec son doigt sans s’y perdre.
  • Free of unnecessary flourishes : A clear print or cursive style is preferable to overly artistic fonts that may hinder letter recognition.

The "Shared Reading" Tip

At 5 years old, even if they are beginning to read a few words, keep reading the story to them.

  • The 50/50 method: Ask them to read the titles or repeated words (onomatopoeia like "Vroom" or "Bling"), while you read the rest. This creates an immediate sense of achievement!
